Heart of Midlothian have signed Laurent Mendy from Forest Green Rovers, with the League Two club saying the fee could eventually reach close to £1m — a figure they described as a club record (BBC Sport). The move was officially announced on 24 July 2026 (Hearts FC).

Mendy arrives at Tynecastle as a 47-appearance captain who led Forest Green to a seventh-place finish and a play-off quarter-final last season. Hearts, who finished second in the Scottish Premiership — the top flight north of the border — were blunt in their assessment, calling him a "standout" for the Gloucestershire side.

The picture Hearts painted was of a defender who does more than defend. Tall and physical, Mendy was often deployed at centre-half but carries ball-playing attributes that let him step into midfield — a centre-half who can carry the ball forward and start attacks, not just clear them. Hearts' own announcement listed him as a "French-born midfielder," suggesting the Edinburgh club may have more than one role in mind for him.

What makes Mendy's arrival at a top-tier Scottish club striking is the road he travelled to get there. Before Forest Green, his career wound through the English non-league ranks: Thamesmead Town, Greenwich Borough, Whyteleafe, Ashford United, Dartford, and VCD Athletic. A season in Sweden with Amal followed, then four seasons with Macclesfield, where he, Tre Pemberton, and Neil Kengni were all signed by Forest Green together on permanent deals in July 2025 (Forest Green Rovers). Mendy had followed a manager or coach named Savage from Macclesfield to Forest Green the previous year, and it was there that he made the leap from the semi-professional grind to a club now banking a record fee for his departure.

For Hearts, the signing addresses a squad that overachieved last season by finishing runners-up in Scotland, a result that brings European football and the need for greater depth. A ball-playing defender who can slot into midfield gives a manager tactical flexibility — the ability to change shape during a match without using a substitution.

For Forest Green, losing a captain is never ideal, but a fee approaching £1m represents a financial windfall for a club at that level and a testament to how far Mendy's stock has risen in twelve months. He goes from the play-off quarter-finals of England's fourth tier to a side that will compete in Europe. That gap, on paper, is enormous. Mendy now has the pre-season and the opening weeks of the campaign to prove he can bridge it.
