A 54-year-old man died on Friday while working on the renovation of FC Barcelona's Spotify Camp Nou stadium, Catalan regional police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the site but could not save the worker's life. Police said the man is believed to have died as a result of "a blow" sustained while working on the redevelopment, BBC Sport reported. An investigation into the incident is under way.

FC Barcelona issued a statement confirming the death. "FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of the worker who lost his life yesterday in the workplace accident that occurred during the renovation works at Spotify Camp Nou," the club said. The statement expressed deepest condolences and extended heartfelt support to the worker's family, friends, and colleagues.

Club president Joan Laporta personally conveyed his condolences to the family and "places himself at their disposal on behalf of the entire club," according to the statement.

The Spotify Camp Nou — Barcelona's home since 1957 and the largest stadium in Europe — has been undergoing a major redevelopment since June 2023. The project, which will raise the ground's capacity to 105,000, is not expected to be completed until early 2028. Barcelona have been playing home matches at the city's Olympic Stadium on Montjuïc hill while the work is carried out.
