Bruno Guimaraes has told Newcastle United he wants to join Arsenal, according to Sky Sports — but the club's captain has not handed in a formal transfer request, and his contract runs until 2028.

The Brazil international informed Newcastle of his desire to move to the Emirates after his country's exit from the World Cup, Sky Sports reported on 9 July. A subsequent Sky Sports update on 14 July confirmed that no formal transfer request has been submitted. In other words, Guimaraes has made his feelings known privately, but the mechanics of a departure — a written request, a bidding war, a fee agreed between clubs — have not been set in motion.

Guimaraes has been the heartbeat of Eddie Howe's side since arriving from Lyon in 2022. He has made 195 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 31 goals (Sky Sports). He wears the armband. He is the player Newcastle built their midfield around, a combination of bite and craft that has made him one of the Premier League's most complete midfielders.

The complication for Newcastle is that Guimaraes is not the only key figure to have departed or pushed for the exit.
