Toy Story 5 has crossed $1 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing release of 2026 so far. The Pixar sequel has earned $448 million domestically — the United States and Canada — and $573 million internationally, for a global tally of $1.022 billion, according to Variety.

It is the third film this year to reach the mark, joining The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael, both of which finished their runs at roughly $1.001 billion. Toy Story 5 got there faster.

Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the film opened on June 19, 2026, and posted the biggest debut of the year: $160 million domestically and $312 million worldwide — the second-best global opening for a Pixar film, behind only 2024's Inside Out 2, per Deadline. That $312 million figure was also the best opening in the Toy Story series.

The film carries the tagline "Toy meets Tech," and it arrived with a marquee name on the soundtrack: Taylor Swift wrote a new song, "I Knew It, I Knew You," for the film. Disney also credited its streaming platform in a July 15 article titled "To Infinity… and 2 Billion Hours!: How Disney+ Helped Toy Story 5 Soar," suggesting that Disney+ viewing ahead of release boosted audience turnout.

Toy Story 5 is on track to become the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, overtaking Toy Story 4, which finished at $1.07 billion in 2019. It is already the third Toy Story sequel to cross $1 billion, following Toy Story 3 ($1.06 billion, 2010) and Toy Story 4. Earlier in its run, it surpassed Finding Nemo at the domestic box office, Deadline reported on July 9.

The billion-dollar milestone carries a different weight in 2026 than it once did. In 2019, nine films crossed $1 billion — the most in a single year. In 2020, not one film reached the mark, as COVID-related theatre closures shut down global cinema for months. Last year, three films made it: Zootopia 2, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and Lilo & Stitch. Three have already matched that count in 2026, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day — a sequel to 2021's No Way Home — set to open on July 31.

The release also arrives at an uneasy moment for Pixar. In the week before the film crossed $1 billion, Pixar Animation Studios was hit by layoffs as part of broader cuts at Disney. Pixar's other 2026 release was Hoppers, an original animated feature about a student who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver.

Disney became the first studio to surpass $3 billion at the worldwide box office in 2026, Deadline reported on June 25 — a figure driven in large part by Toy Story 5's performance. The Odyssey, another Disney release, has earned $639.6 million globally after just two weekends in theatres.

For a franchise that began in 1995, a fifth installment crossing $1 billion is a commercial fact that needs no embellishment. The numbers stand on their own.
