Final Fantasy 14 Lands on Switch 2 on 4 August, With a New Tank, Two Crossovers, and a Catch on Subscriptions

Final Fantasy 14 arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on 4 August 2026, Square Enix confirmed at Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin. The launch coincides with Dawntrail Patch 7.5, titled "Trail to the Heavens," and brings the full MMORPG — a massively multiplayer online role-playing game played in a shared world with thousands of others — to Nintendo's newest console. Pre-orders opened during the Berlin event, where attendees also watched a five-minute extended teaser for Evercold, the next expansion. That expansion kicks off a new story arc called the Godless Realms Saga and introduces the Bastion, a tank class — the role that holds enemy attention so other players can deal damage — wielding a pair of greatshields called skyltborg. The Switch 2 version comes with a free trial, so newcomers can sample the game before paying. There is one notable catch for existing players: a Switch 2 subscription is separate from subscriptions on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, even if you use the same account. Players maintaining two active subscriptions get a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 fee. No Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. Eurogamer

Storage will be a consideration. The US Nintendo eShop lists the game at 117.2 GB at launch — a substantial footprint for a console whose base internal storage is 256 GB. A Complete Edition is listed as a digital-only release. Eurogamer; Nintendo US eShop

Nintendo's Singapore website had already signalled interest, listing Game Trials for Final Fantasy XIV Online on Switch 2 starting 24 July 2026 — a week of early access before the full launch. Beyond the platform launch, Fan Festival 2026 brought a wave of content announcements. An Evangelion crossover event called "Ghosts of Desire" is coming, as is a crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. A new data centre system — backend infrastructure that groups players by region for better connection quality and same-region matchmaking — was also announced. Eurogamer

The official Final Fantasy 14 YouTube channel published the Evercold extended teaser on 25 July, with a shorter version dating back to April. Both sit in a dedicated playlist on the channel. YouTube; YouTube

For fans, the Switch 2 launch removes the last major platform barrier for a game already on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. The separate subscription model is the trade-off — and the 117 GB download means microSD storage will be a practical concern for anyone running a digital library on the console.
