Sean Astin, the actor who played Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, says he had to sell his house because the films paid him so little. In a July 2026 interview with The Guardian, Astin was blunt: "I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy" (The Hollywood Reporter).

The numbers tell the story. Astin said on the Jim and Sam Show in 2017 that he earned roughly $75,000 per film — about $250,000 across all three (The Hollywood Reporter). Before filming began, he had bought a house with a $250,000-a-year mortgage (Yahoo Entertainment, September 2024). The trilogy went on to gross $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office (The Hollywood Reporter).

The reason the cast's pay was so modest comes down to how the films were made. New Line Cinema shot all three movies at once — what Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins, called "a real gamble" financially in comments to Business Insider. Wood explained that because the production was not making one film and then renegotiating for the next, the ensemble never commanded the escalating salaries a hit franchise usually brings (The Hollywood Reporter).

Astin told The Guardian he is "very comfortable financially now," having gone on to a steady career that includes the Netflix hit Stranger Things. But the experience clearly stuck. When asked whether he would fight for better pay on any future Lord of the Rings role, his answer was two words: "Goddam right" (The Hollywood Reporter).

He now has the standing to make that fight stick. Astin serves as the national president of SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents roughly 160,000 actors and broadcasters across film, television and radio (The Hollywood Reporter). The role puts him on the opposite side of the bargaining table from the studios whose offers once left him short.

For fans of the franchise, the question of who might return — and on what terms — is no longer hypothetical. A new Lord of the Rings film, Hunt for Gollum, is in development with Andy Serkis directing. A second instalment, carrying the working title Shadow of the Past, is being co-written by comedian and noted Tolkien enthusiast Stephen Colbert (The Hollywood Reporter).

Neither project has a confirmed release date. Whether Samwise Gamgee appears in either remains to be seen — but if he does, the man behind him intends to be paid properly this time.
