Cursor Launches India-Specific Plan at ₹649/Month, Betting on Its Own AI Models

Cursor launched Cursor Start on July 27, 2026, its first country-specific subscription plan, priced at ₹649 per month (about $7) for users in India. The plan costs roughly one-third of Cursor's standard Pro subscription, which runs $20 per month. TechCrunch
The India launch carries strategic weight on two fronts. India is Cursor's third-largest market globally and home to its highest concentration of power users — developers who use the tool intensively and rely on its advanced features. Cursor's Indian user base more than tripled in the year leading up to July 2026. The country also has over 27 million developers on GitHub, second only to the U.S., with more than two million joining in 2026 alone. OpenAI and Anthropic have both rolled out India-specific pricing over the past year, placing Cursor's move within a broader pattern of AI tooling companies adjusting to Indian purchasing power.
Cursor Start includes access to Cursor's Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, with usage limits higher than the free tier. Composer 2.5, launched in May 2026, is the company's own AI model for generating and editing code. Grok 4.5, introduced on the Cursor blog on July 8, 2026, is described by the company as its "most intelligent model" and the first it built for more than software engineering tasks.
The plan also ships with cloud agents (autonomous code-writing assistants that run on Cursor's servers rather than locally), an iOS app, plugins, Model Context Protocol support (a standard for connecting AI tools to external data sources), hooks (custom triggers that run actions at specific points in a workflow), and skills. What it does not include is equally telling: no access to frontier models from OpenAI or Anthropic, and no Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, or the Cursor SDK. The feature split draws a clear line between what Cursor considers its own platform value (Composer, Grok, cloud agents, MCP, hooks) and what it treats as premium-tier features (third-party frontier models, autonomous workflows, SDK access).
Payments for Cursor Start are handled via credit cards, debit cards, and India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI is a national payment system that handles a large share of digital transactions in India, so supporting it is a practical necessity rather than a courtesy. Cursor will use VPN detection among multiple checks to ensure the plan is available only to individual users in India.
Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, said the company could expand localized pricing to other markets if the India model proves successful. That is a conditional signal rather than a roadmap commitment, but it indicates Cursor is treating this as a template rather than a one-off.
The launch comes weeks before SpaceX's expected acquisition of Cursor closes. SpaceX is expected to acquire Cursor for $60 billion in stock, as reported by TechCrunch on June 16, 2026. The timing raises the question of whether this India push is a Cursor initiative that predates acquisition planning or one that aligns with SpaceX's broader ambitions. The available reporting does not clarify that distinction.
The feature gating is the most strategically interesting detail in the announcement, in my view. By bundling Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5 into a $7 plan while withholding OpenAI and Anthropic models, Cursor is positioning its own models as sufficient for the core developer workflow. That is a bet on model self-sufficiency that most AI coding tool companies have been reluctant to make so explicitly. If Indian developers, a population that includes Cursor's highest concentration of power users, find Composer and Grok adequate without GPT-class or Claude-class models, it strengthens Cursor's margin profile and its negotiating position with third-party model providers.
The India developer market is the obvious testing ground. Twenty-seven million GitHub developers represent a population large enough to generate meaningful signal, and the tripling of Cursor's user base there over the past year suggests the product has already found product-market fit without localized pricing. Dropping the price to ₹649 while adding UPI support removes the remaining friction for a segment that was already adopting the tool rapidly.
Whether the template holds outside India depends on factors the announcement does not address: regulatory treatment of AI tooling in other markets, competitive responses from local incumbents, and the cost structure of running Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5 at scale. Composer 2.5's pricing — $0.50 per million input tokens and $2.50 per million output tokens — gives a rough sense of the unit economics Cursor is working with. But without knowing what Cursor actually pays to run inference (the computing cost of generating model responses), the margin on a $7 plan remains unclear.
What is clear is that Cursor is building toward a model where its own AI models, its own agent infrastructure, and its own payment rails form a self-contained product stack, with frontier third-party models positioned as an upsell rather than a dependency. The India plan is the most concrete expression of that strategy to date.
