CNN chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins sat down with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show the Monday after the 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner, where Donald Trump used his speech to mock her by name — and Collins said she saw it coming.

"I'm not surprised," Collins told Stewart during the interview, which aired 27 July 2026 as Season 31, Episode 93 of The Daily Show, in a segment titled "An Outbreak of Liberal Idiocy" (Variety, 28 July 2026; Comedy Central). Collins, who also anchors CNN's The Source, said Trump insults her regularly inside the Oval Office, so a public version at the annual press dinner was nothing new.

Trump told the room that Collins "shouldn't get the award" and called it "fake" (Variety). Collins had been honoured at the dinner for her coverage of Trump's contentious meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump also said Collins should "smile more," and compared her to trans advocate Dylan Mulvaney, referencing the 2023 Bud Light controversy. "I thought Kaitlan had really made it big with a major new sponsorship," Trump said during the speech, "but then I informed her that it wasn't her on the Bud Light can, it was Dylan Mulvaney."

Mulvaney responded the following day. In a TikTok video posted Sunday, she said she was "honored" to be compared to Collins (Variety).

Collins noted that the WHCD room went quiet during Trump's remarks, despite being filled with his staffers, cabinet members, allies, and Republicans in Congress. When Stewart asked whether the silence came from respect for the president, Collins replied: "Who's to say."

The 2026 dinner itself had been rescheduled from April after a gunman crashed through security at the original event (Variety).

Collins thanked her CNN colleague Wolf Blitzer, who presented the journalism awards at the dinner. She said Blitzer had called her every day since the Friday event. But Collins was also clear about what she wanted the focus to be — not her reaction to Trump's insults, but the reporting that had angered him in the first place (Variety). She told Stewart she designs her questions to be understandable to any audience, regardless of political leaning.
