Mike Flanagan is in talks to join the Warhammer 40,000 series at Amazon MGM Studios as an executive producer, according to Deadline.

Henry Cavill is already attached to executive produce and star in the adaptation of Games Workshop's sprawling tabletop sci-fi universe. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the global rights back in December 2024, after Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso partnered with Cavill to secure the IP — shorthand for intellectual property — before taking it to the streaming giant.

Whether Flanagan will also serve as showrunner, the lead creative voice who oversees the writers' room and day-to-day production, has not yet been determined. But signs of momentum are stacking up. IGN reported on 8 July 2025 that Flanagan had completed initial outlines for the series and was expected to move on to writing the script shortly. Games Workshop's latest annual report, flagged by Screen Rant, stated that the series had been boarded by United Artists and Flanagan himself.

Flanagan signed a multi-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios in March — meaning the studio funds and develops his projects in exchange for first dibs — with Carrie, his series adaptation of the Stephen King novel, as the first project under that pact. Carrie is set to premiere on Prime Video on 7 October.

The filmmaker's recent track record gives a sense of why Amazon wants him on a tentpole property. He wrote, directed, edited and produced the 2024 film The Life of Chuck, which won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is currently writing, directing and producing The Exorcist: Martyrs for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, with a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Diane Lane, Carla Gugino and Laurence Fishburne.

For Warhammer 40,000, the executive producing team already in place includes Vertigo Entertainment, Cavill, and Games Workshop's Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill. The property — a tabletop miniature wargame set in a grim, far-future universe where humanity battles aliens, daemons and itself — has a fanbase that scrutinises every development decision. Cavill, a publicly outspoken Warhammer enthusiast, has been the project's most visible champion.

What stands out is the pace. The rights deal closed less than two years ago, and the project has already moved from acquisition to outlines and an executive producer search. Streaming adaptations of beloved franchises can spend years circling a runway without taking off. This one appears to be taxiing.

For fans, the Flanagan talks mean something concrete: a filmmaker with a proven handle on dark, character-driven genre material is being brought closer to a universe built on exactly that. The question of whether he runs the show remains open. The fact that he is writing for it does not.
