Australian players of GTA Online can no longer gamble inside the game's Diamond Casino & Resort, the virtual gambling venue where players bet in-game currency on poker, roulette, and slot machines.

GameSpot reported the change on 28 July 2026, crediting Vice for surfacing Reddit user reports that the casino's gambling features had been disabled for players connecting from Australia. The casino itself remains part of the game world — players can still enter the building. What is gone is the ability to place bets.

GTA Online is the persistent multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games' open-world crime title, and the Diamond Casino has been one of its most popular destinations since it opened in 2019. Players wager with GTA$, a currency earned through gameplay or purchased with real money through microtransactions — small in-game purchases that let players skip grinding for rewards.

The change traces back to a classification overhaul by the Australian government. New rules for video games containing gambling-like content took effect on 22 September 2024, introducing fresh categories for games that include simulated gambling or loot boxes — digital containers with randomised contents that players buy or earn. The reform came after a House of Representatives committee report found that simulated gambling and gambling-like features in interactive games could cause harm, including addiction, and may normalise monetised gambling among young people.

Australia's classification board now applies age-restricted ratings — including an R18+ category that bars anyone under 18 from legally accessing the content — to games meeting its gambling-content thresholds. Rather than face an adults-only rating that could limit sales and visibility, some publishers have opted to disable the features entirely in the Australian market.

Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have not publicly commented on the casino's removal. The change appears to have been applied without a formal announcement, surfacing first through player reports on Reddit.

For Australian GTA Online players, the Diamond Casino's gambling floor is now a room they can walk through but can no longer play in. The in-game currency they would have wagered still works everywhere else in the game — at shops, on vehicles, on properties — just not at the tables that drew the regulator's attention.

The shift puts GTA Online in company with other titles that have adjusted gambling-like features for specific markets. Several mobile games have reworked or removed loot boxes in Belgium and the Netherlands following similar regulatory pressure, and Electronic Arts rewrote the progression system in its FIFA series (now EA Sports FC) in response to scrutiny over Ultimate Team card packs in multiple European countries.

Australia's new classification framework applies to any game sold or distributed in the country, whether on a console, PC, or mobile storefront. That scope means the Diamond Casino's quiet closure for Australian players may not be the last such adjustment — just the most visible one so far.
