The Rookie's Eric Winter Reveals Cast Filmed an Alternate Season 8 Ending in Case the Show Was Canceled

The cast of ABC's The Rookie filmed an alternate ending to their season eight finale — one they would have used if the network had pulled the plug on the show.

Eric Winter, who plays Officer Tim Bradford, revealed the detail while speaking with People at Comic-Con 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The move is a common practice in network television: when a show's renewal has not been confirmed by the time a season finale shoots, producers often prepare two endings — one that leaves the door open for another year, and one that gives fans a sense of closure.

In this case, ABC had not yet announced whether The Rookie would return. The network made the call official in April, renewing the series for a ninth season.

The season eight finale, which aired in May, ended on a dramatic note: Tim Bradford proposes to Lucy Chen, and the newly engaged couple are then kidnapped. Winter declined to say what the alternate ending contained, telling People it would be a spoiler — meaning the footage, now shelved, could reveal plot details that the show's writers may still draw on later.

The Rookie stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a man who becomes the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department. The ensemble cast also includes Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, Lisseth Chavez, and Winter himself. The series has ranked in the top 15 network entertainment series among adults 18–49 — the demographic that advertisers treat as the standard currency for broadcast television, The Hollywood Reporter notes.

Season nine is expected to premiere in early 2027. ABC also announced in May a new drama series, The Rookie: North, which will expand the show's universe and join the network's lineup that same year, per ABC's own announcement.

Winter's path to the role was unconventional. He was a pre-med student at UCLA before deciding to pursue acting, a detail he shared on Instagram in July 2025.

For fans, the existence of an alternate ending is a reminder of how narrow the margin can be between a story that continues and one that ends for good. A writers' room plans a season arc, a crew of hundreds films it, and whether that story gets finished can come down to a single scheduling decision made months after the cameras stop rolling. The Rookie will get to finish its next chapter. The other ending stays in the can.
