Ten women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against actor and musician Jared Leto in a BBC documentary titled Jared Leto: Hollywood's Dark Secret, directed by Alice McShane and available now on BBC iPlayer BBC iPlayer.

The BBC says nine of the ten women are sharing their stories for the first time. All of the women allege that the interactions took place between 2002 and 2016, when Leto was in his thirties and forties. Leto is 54 years old, according to Variety.

The allegations span a range of conduct. One woman accuses Leto of sexually assaulting her in a motel bathroom when she was 17. Another says Leto threatened her with sexual assault when she was 19. A third describes having sex with Leto in California when she was 17 — below the state's age of consent of 18, which would classify the encounter as statutory rape.

A fourth woman alleges that Leto made repeated sexually explicit phone calls to her when she was 16, and on at least one occasion suggested they have sex. The BBC says it has seen a non-disclosure agreement — a legal contract restricting someone from speaking publicly — that this woman was asked to sign regarding her relationship with Leto. She refused to sign it.

Four additional women in the documentary accuse Leto of making what they describe as "strange and often very sexual" phone calls to them when they were younger. Two men who worked with Leto's band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, also spoke to the programme. They alleged that Leto would sometimes invite teenage girls backstage to his dressing room or to the house where he was recording.

The BBC says it corroborated a number of the women's accounts with friends and family who were told about the encounters at the time. The broadcaster also says it has seen pictures and messages that support the women's accounts in some cases.

The documentary adds Leto's name to a growing list of high-profile entertainment figures whose past conduct has been the subject of journalistic investigation. Leto, an Oscar winner for Dallas Buyers Club (2013), has in recent years appeared in major studio releases including Morbius (2022) and House of Gucci (2021), and remains active in both film and music.

No criminal charges have been filed in connection with the allegations in the documentary.
