A New Far Cry Project Codenamed Kodiak Has Entered Development at Ubisoft's Vantage Studios

A new Far Cry game codenamed Kodiak has entered development at Vantage Studios, the subsidiary Ubisoft and Tencent established to lead work on the publisher's largest franchises, Eurogamer reported on 29 July 2026.
Kodiak is described as an open-world first-person shooter where player interactions and player-driven stories take centre stage, according to the same report, which attributed its details to Insider Gaming. The project recently passed its conception stage — the internal greenlight phase where a game's core concept is defined before full production begins. Kodiak replaces a previously cancelled Far Cry project codenamed Maverick, Insider Gaming reported on 27 July.
Neither Kodiak nor its sibling project has been publicly announced by Ubisoft.
Vantage Studios is a relatively new operation. Ubisoft officially launched the subsidiary on 1 October 2025 as the first of five "Creative Houses" in a new internal operating model, Insider Gaming reported at the time. The studio is dedicated to developing the Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six franchises, with Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot serving as co-CEOs, Ubisoft announced in July 2025.
Kodiak is not the only Far Cry game in the pipeline. Far Cry 7, codenamed Blackbird, is a separate project that has been in development for years at Ubisoft. According to Eurogamer's report, Blackbird ran into development problems and was pushed back internally but has since recovered and is back on track. It is described as a traditional single-player game with a multiplayer component, possibly co-operative.
Vantage Studios co-CEO Charlie Guillemot called Blackbird "honestly impressive" in a recent internal interview, and reportedly considers it the first game of multiple titles in a planned series.
For fans, the takeaway is that two Far Cry projects are now in active development under the same umbrella — one a player-driven open-world shooter still in its early stages, the other a more conventional single-player entry further along in production. The most recent release in the series was Far Cry 6, which launched in 2021.
For a franchise that has been quiet for five years, the sudden appearance of two parallel projects signals a clear bet on Far Cry's future under Vantage Studios. Whether Kodiak's emphasis on player-driven stories points to a live-service direction — a game sold and updated in seasons after launch — remains unconfirmed. What is confirmed is that Ubisoft's biggest open-world shooter series now has dedicated studio leadership and two titles in the works.
