Charlton Athletic have signed full-back Ashleigh Neville from Leicester City on a two-year deal, reuniting the 33-year-old with manager Karen Hills BBC Sport.

The move brings Neville back together with the boss she worked under for three years at Tottenham, a spell that included earning promotion to the Women's Super League — the top division of English women's football. Charlton, newly promoted to that same top flight themselves, are building a squad designed to stay there.

Neville brings serious pedigree. She has made over 100 appearances in the Women's Super League, the elite tier of the domestic game, and arrived at Leicester in January on a one-and-a-half-year contract. Six months on, that deal has been cut short by circumstances neither side likely planned for.

Leicester were relegated in May following a play-off defeat by Charlton. That result sent Charlton up and dropped Leicester into the second tier — now officially known as WSL2, as Charlton's own announcement noted when describing the club Neville is leaving Charlton Athletic. The irony is sharp: the team that beat Leicester into the second division is now taking one of their players.

There was no relegation release clause in Neville's Leicester contract, and no mutual termination was agreed, according to BBC Sport. That means a fee was likely paid by Charlton to secure her services outright — a permanent transfer, subject to league approval Leicester City Women.

What makes this stand out is the human thread running through the business. Neville and Hills know each other, trust each other, and have climbed a division together before. For a newly promoted side staring at a season built on survival rather than title dreams, that kind of shared history matters. A manager who already knows what a player can do does not need months to find out.
