Ariana Grande has described her forthcoming album Petal as coming from a place of "unfiltered rage," speaking in an Apple Music clip posted on Wednesday, July 29. Grande told Apple Music that she is "usually too shy to tap into" unfiltered rage and that she normally does "a lot of rewrites and make things a little kinder." This time, she said, she "didn't filter as much." The album contains 12 tracks and "pulls from many different parts of myself," Grande said, calling it "very experimental and different for me."

In the clip, Grande sits on a bed that is part of her Eternal Sunshine Tour stage design — a set piece fans of the tour would recognise. The setting ties the album rollout directly to the live production she has been performing across North America.

The lead single, "Hate That I Made You Love Me," reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the chart that tracks the most-consumed songs in the US across streaming, radio airplay and sales. Grande also debuted the title track, "Petal," live on stage at her first Eternal Sunshine Tour show in Montreal, giving audiences an early hearing of material from the record before its official release.

This is not the first time Grande has framed Petal in raw terms. In a May video posted to social media, she described the album as "a little feral" and said it comes from a place she had been "too shy or polite to tap into before." She added: "This kind of just feels like, F–k it."

For fans, the Apple Music conversation offers the fullest picture yet of what shaped the record — and a clear signal that Grande is leaning into a more direct, less polished emotional register than on previous releases. Two months separate that May social media post from this week's interview, and the language has sharpened: "feral" in May, "unfiltered rage" in July. The album lands the day after the full interview airs.

Petal follows Eternal Sunshine, the album that gave the current tour its name. The tour is underway, the single is at the top of the Hot 100, and the full 12-track album arrives Friday.
