The UK is seeing a notable wave of hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) sightings in 2026, prompting a surge of public inquiries to the charity Butterfly Conservation and drawing attention from entomologists assessing whether the year's numbers reflect a genuine population spike or a convergence of weather and human factors.
Richard Austin, a recording schemes officer at Butterfly Conservation, told the Guardian that the charity had received a big increase in hummingbird hawk-moth sightings and inquiries in 2026. The hummingbird hawk-moth is a day-flying moth — a member of the Lepidoptera order, which includes butterflies and moths — named for its feeding behaviour: it hovers before flowers, wings beating at high frequency, extending a long proboscis (a straw-like mouthpart) to feed on nectar. It is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin and reaches the UK as a migratory species, carried north on favourable winds. The insect does not typically survive UK winters in its adult or larval stages, though that calculus may be shifting.
Richard Harrington, an honorary fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, told the Guardian that warm southerly winds associated with recent heatwaves could have helped bring high numbers to the UK. The hummingbird hawk-moth's life history makes it a useful bioindicator — a species whose movements and population changes reflect broader environmental conditions. It is highly mobile, responds rapidly to weather systems, and depends on specific larval host plants whose condition reflects wider climatic shifts. If Mediterranean drying is indeed displacing the species northward, the UK sightings could be an early signal of range contraction at the southern edge and range expansion at the northern edge, a pattern documented across multiple Lepidopteran taxa. Equally, if warm winters eventually permit overwintering survival in the UK, the species would join a growing list of continental invertebrates establishing resident populations in Britain as climatic envelopes — the temperature and habitat conditions a species needs — shift northward.
