M-Appeal picks up Matilda De Angelis drama 'Balcanica' ahead of Venice premiere

Berlin-based sales outfit M-Appeal has acquired international sales rights to 'Balcanica,' Nicola Sorcinelli's debut feature, ahead of its world premiere in competition at the 23rd Giornate degli Autori — the Venice Days sidebar that runs alongside the 83rd Venice International Film Festival (Variety).

The film stars Matilda De Angelis, known to international audiences for her lead role in the Netflix series 'The Law According to Lidia Poët.' She plays Greta, an Italian doctor whose path crosses with Nasar, an orchestra conductor, and his tuba-playing son Jalil. The two are travelling across the Balkans after fleeing Afghanistan, where music has been banned (Variety).

Babak Karimi, a Silver Bear winner for his work in Asghar Farhadi's 'A Separation' — which took the Golden Bear at the 2011 Berlinale and the 2012 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film — also stars, alongside Ivar Wafaei. Sorcinelli wrote the screenplay with Andrea Brusa. The 81-minute colour feature is a co-production between Italy, Serbia, and Croatia (Venice Days).

Nightswim and Fremantle's Wildside produce, with This and That Productions and Antitalent as co-producers and M74 and Nieminen Film on board in association. Maren Kroymann leads M-Appeal as CEO. The company, which specialises in bringing international art-house titles to the global market, will handle sales outside the producing territories (Variety).

For a first feature, the film lands in a prominent slot. Venice Days — Giornate degli Autori in Italian — is an independent sidebar running parallel to the main Venice competition, programmed separately and often a launchpad for emerging directors. The in-competition section awards the GdA Director's Award, which carries a cash prize (Venice Days). 'Balcanica' is the only Italian title in competition at this year's edition, which sits within the broader 83rd Venice festival running on the Lido.

The Venice date gives M-Appeal a festival premiere to anchor its sales pitch to distributors. A sales agent's job is to sell distribution rights territory by territory — each country's distributor pays for the right to release the film in cinemas or on platforms there. A competition slot at a major festival gives buyers a concrete context: a public screening, critical response, and a credential that can travel on a poster.

Sorcinelli, an Italian director, was confirmed in the Venice Days lineup in late July (Variety). The 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs on the Lido in early September.
