The director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation wants the game on a physical disc — but he cannot promise it will happen.

Naoki Hamaguchi, the game's director, made the comments at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, speaking to GamesRadar+ (Eurogamer). He described physical media as "a wonderful culture" and said "it would be a shame to lose that" (GamesRadar+).

But the decision is not his alone. Hamaguchi said publisher Square Enix is "still having internal discussions" on the exact product lineup — the specific editions and formats the game will be sold in, known in the industry as SKUs — and that he "cannot say anything definitive at this point" (Eurogamer). IGN and Kotaku both independently confirmed the same picture: the director is pushing for a physical edition, but nothing has been decided (IGN; Kotaku).

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the third and final entry in Square Enix's remake trilogy, reimagining the landmark 1997 role-playing game. Square Enix announced the title on 5 June 2026, with a release window of Spring 2027 (Square Enix press site). That gives the publisher roughly a year before launch — and the physical-versus-digital question is part of a much broader industry shift.

Sony, whose PlayStation 5 is the lead platform for the Final Fantasy 7 remake series, is moving away from physical disc production. According to Polygon, Sony plans to end new physical disc manufacturing by 2028 (Polygon). GamesRadar+ noted the same trend as context for Hamaguchi's comments — the hardware maker that most Final Fantasy players buy the game on is itself walking away from the disc (GamesRadar+).

The stakes for players are simple. A physical edition means a disc you can hold, lend, resell, or keep on a shelf after servers go dark. A digital-only release lives or dies with a storefront account. For a concluding chapter of a trilogy that began with 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the format choice carries weight beyond packaging.

For now, Hamaguchi's preference is on record — but a preference is not a product decision. Square Enix has not confirmed any specific editions or formats for Revelation, and the publisher has not said when it will.
