The physical copy of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will not contain the full game. Players who buy the disc will still need to download extra data, on all formats.

Series director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the plan in interviews ahead of the game's announced release on 8 April 2027. He said the disc will hold the opening section and act as a sort of key, with the rest of the game to be downloaded. Video Games Chronicle

Size is the problem. Hamaguchi said Revelation is likely to be around 200GB. Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth both shipped on two discs. Revelation will ship on only one.

Hamaguchi said he argued strongly for a physical version at all. He told fans he "did my best". He described the physical-release situation as "a very tricky subject", after fans asked for a full-disc version with no download required. Eurogamer IGN

He says he pushed hard. Decisions on product line-up, versions for sale and how the game goes on sale sit with the publishing team, where his authority is limited. He said he used his position to make the case for a disc amid pressure for disc-less and digital-only editions, after negotiations internally and with first parties, meaning the console makers.

Revelation is the third and final part of Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. It is planned as a multi-format day-one release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC. Square Enix describes the story as the final battle to decide the fate of the world.

For fans, this means the box on the shelf is not the complete archive some collectors want. The disc will start the game, but storage space and an internet connection will do the rest of the work.
