For fans of the ABC sitcom, the snapshot carries weight because Thomas has rarely been seen in public for years. Now 44, he walked away from Hollywood in the early 2000s and had not been photographed publicly in quite some time, Variety reports. Home Improvement ran for eight seasons on ABC during the 1990s. Richardson played Jill Taylor, the family matriarch. Thomas played middle son Randy Taylor across 179 episodes and voiced Young Simba in Disney's The Lion King. Smith played youngest son Mark Taylor.

Thomas left Home Improvement roughly a year before the series ended. He later attended Harvard, Columbia, and St. Andrew's University in Scotland. His most recent on-screen appearances came a decade ago: he guest-starred in a few episodes of Tim Allen's sitcom Last Man Standing between 2013 and 2015, reuniting on screen with Richardson in one episode, Variety reports.

The reunion photo notably does not include Tim Allen, who played family patriarch Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor, or Zachery Ty Bryan, who played eldest son Brad. Allen said in June 2026 that a Home Improvement reboot is unlikely, citing "personality problems" related to the actors who played his sons, according to Variety.

Bryan is currently serving a 16-month sentence in a California jail following a 2024 DUI arrest and faces additional sentences in Oregon and Oklahoma, Variety reports.
