Robin Williams' Children Revive His Instagram to Fight AI Abuse of His Likeness
Robin Williams' three children have brought his Instagram account back to life, twelve years after it fell silent following his death in 2014.
Zak, Zelda and Cody Williams posted a joint statement on their father's official Instagram page on Monday, explaining that the revival is meant to honour his legacy and push back against what they describe as "rampant AI abuse" of his likeness, according to Variety. The account had been dormant since Williams died in August 2014.
The move comes nearly a month after what would have been the actor's 75th birthday on 21 July. Zelda Williams, Robin's eldest daughter, elaborated on the decision in an Instagram story on her personal account, acknowledging that seeing her father's page reactivate could be "triggering" for some fans. She framed the revival as a practical response to a growing problem: making the account a home for authentic clips and photographs is, in her words, one of the best ways found to fight back against AI-generated content using her father's voice and image.
This is not the family's first stand on the issue. In October 2023, during the Screen Actors Guild strike — a labour dispute in which protections against artificial intelligence were a central demand — Zelda Williams called AI videos featuring her father's voice "personally disturbing." Later that October, she asked people who sent her AI-generated clips of her father to stop, writing plainly: "It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want."
The SAG strike, which ran from July to November 2023, saw union members push for contractual safeguards against AI replication of performers' voices and faces. Williams' likeness has circulated widely in AI-generated videos across social platforms in the years since, a trend his family has watched closely and opposed at every turn.
For fans, the revived account offers something the algorithmic imitations cannot: a verified, family-run archive of the real Robin Williams — the stand-up, the interviews, the behind-the-scenes moments — curated by the people who knew him best.
