Disney+ has cancelled the Marvel series Wonder Man after a single season, walking back a Season 2 renewal it announced just four months ago. Variety reported the cancellation on 30 July 2026.

The reversal is unusually swift. Disney renewed Wonder Man for a second season in March 2026, roughly two months after the show's January premiere. Marvel.com even published an official announcement at the time, calling it "the acclaimed Disney+ series." But the writers' room for Season 2 was never opened, and the show's writers have been released to pursue other projects, according to Variety.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II starred as Simon Williams, the Hollywood actor turned superhero at the centre of the story, with Ben Kingsley reprising his Marvel role as Trevor Slattery. The Season 1 cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, and Olivia Thirlby. Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest created the series; Cretton directed the first two episodes and Guest served as showrunner — the lead writer who oversees the writers' room and day-to-day creative decisions.

All eight episodes dropped at once on 27 January 2026, a full-season binge release. The show landed at number eight on the Nielsen streaming top 10 originals chart for the week of 26 January–1 February, then fell off the following week. Nielsen recorded 618 million minutes viewed in that opening week, with 41% of the audience concentrated in the 35–49 age demographic — the highest proportion of any top 10 streaming title that week, Deadline reported. Disney itself released no viewership figures.

Critical reception was strong: Season 1 holds a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, making him the only live-action performer to receive Emmy nods for both a Marvel and a DC project.

What makes the cancellation stand out is the renewal itself. Virtually all of Marvel Studios' live-action Disney+ series — WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Moon Knight — have been single-season runs. Loki is the only one to reach two seasons. A Season 2 order for Wonder Man was an anomaly, and now it has been undone before a single new script was written.

The comic-book character dates back to 1964, created by writer Stan Lee and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, debuting in The Avengers #9. Wonder Man was the second Marvel Studios series to air under the "Marvel Spotlight" sub-banner — a label for standalone stories that don't require viewers to follow the wider Marvel continuity — after 2023's Echo.

According to a source cited by Variety, characters from Wonder Man could still appear in other Marvel projects despite the cancellation. Disney has not commented beyond the cancellation itself.
