Snap will hold an event on September 16 in Los Angeles to give the first in-depth look at its standalone AR Specs glasses, with CEO Evan Spiegel scheduled to demonstrate the device live. The event starts at 7PM ET and will be livestreamed at specs.com/launch Engadget.

Pre-orders for the AR Specs are already open ahead of the September showcase. The glasses are priced at $2,195 and are expected to ship in the US, UK, and France during fall 2026 Engadget. The AR Specs are being built and marketed under Specs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Snap Inc. that the company says is dedicated to "making computing more human" Snap Newsroom. The hardware picture that has emerged since the glasses were introduced at the Augmented World Expo in June is substantial. The AR Specs are fully standalone, with no puck and no tether. The frame is constructed from high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer, a lightweight plastic commonly used in sports eyewear, and ships in two sizes: 47mm, weighing 132 grams, and 52mm, weighing 136 grams. The display system uses proprietary liquid crystal on silicon, or LCoS, technology. LCoS is a display method where liquid crystals sit on a silicon chip, allowing fine-grained control of light. This is paired with a redesigned waveguide, the thin optical layer that channels light from the display engine to the eye. That waveguide incorporates billions of nanostructures; Snap says more than 10,000 of them could fit on the tip of a single hair. The system delivers a 51-degree field of view at 16 million colors. The company describes the effective display size as equivalent to a 24-inch desktop monitor when working, and a 115-inch home cinema screen placed roughly 10 feet away when watching a movie Snap Newsroom.

The lenses are electrochromic, meaning they can shift from clear to tinted electronically. Snap says the shift takes 10 seconds and notes that this is the same technology used in Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows Snap Newsroom.

The arms of the glasses house two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. One handles computer vision workloads, the processing that lets the glasses understand what is around you; the other runs AR applications Engadget. The battery supports up to four hours of mixed use.

The software stack includes a built-in browser, AI assistance powered jointly by OpenAI and Google, and hundreds of AR Lenses, including games Engadget.

Splitting computer vision processing from AR application processing onto two separate Snapdragon chips lets each pipeline operate without competing for the same silicon, which matters for keeping response times low in a head-mounted device. That said, the four-hour battery figure suggests Snap is still operating within the thermal and power constraints that have defined standalone AR from the beginning. The 51-degree field of view is competitive with other standalone AR glasses that have reached the market, though it remains narrower than what tethered or enterprise-focused headsets can deliver.

The $2,195 price places the AR Specs firmly outside consumer territory and closer to where early adopters, developers, and AR-focused creators live. The decision to ship in three markets also signals a measured initial rollout rather than a broad launch. Snap's structure of placing the effort under Specs Inc. as a dedicated subsidiary is consistent with how companies have historically ring-fenced ambitious hardware bets that require their own roadmap, talent pipeline, and go-to-market strategy.

What the September 16 event will clarify is how the software ecosystem actually functions in live use. The combination of a built-in browser, dual AI partners, and Snap's existing Lens platform raises practical questions: how applications are distributed, what the browser rendering pipeline looks like on an LCoS waveguide, and how the OpenAI and Google AI integrations are partitioned across the two Snapdragon processors. Spiegel's demonstration will be the first opportunity to see these components working together rather than as listed specifications.

For the AR and spatial computing field, the Specs launch matters because it is one of relatively few credible attempts to deliver fully standalone AR glasses at a form factor and weight that approach everyday wearability. The 132-gram weight for the smaller model is in the range of heavy prescription eyewear rather than the bulk of a headset, and the TR90 frame material is the same class of polymer used in lightweight sports and everyday glasses. Whether that form factor translates into sustained usage at four-hour battery increments is one of the open questions the September event may begin to answer.
