NBCUniversal Names NFL Strategy Chief Christopher Halpin as New CFO Ahead of Spin-Off

NBCUniversal has named Christopher Halpin as its new chief financial officer, bringing in a veteran of the National Football League and the private equity world to steer the company's finances as it prepares to split from parent Comcast.

Halpin starts on September 8 and will report to Mike Cavanagh, co-CEO of Comcast, according to Variety. The appointment lands as NBCUniversal is slated to be spun off from Comcast within a year — a separation that will turn the owner of the NBC broadcast network, Universal film studios, and the Peacock streaming service into a standalone public company.

The incoming CFO spent nearly a decade at the NFL, where he served as chief strategy and growth officer. Before that, he was a partner and managing director at Providence Equity Partners, a firm focused on media and communications investments. He began his career in the Merchant Banking Department of Goldman Sachs & Co. and holds an Economics degree from Princeton University.

Randy Culbertson, NBCUniversal's current CFO, will remain with the company in a new role that has yet to be announced. The company said further details about Culbertson's next position would come in the coming weeks.

For a business that lives and dies by the numbers — how many subscribers Peacock has, how much a film earns at the box office, what a season of television costs to produce — the CFO is the person who sees all of those figures first and decides which ones matter most. Halpin's background spans both the deal-making side, through private equity, and the audience-growth side, through his NFL work growing the league's reach. NBCUniversal will need both skill sets: a spin-off means new public shareholders watching every quarter, a fresh balance sheet to manage, and the ongoing cost of competing in streaming against well-funded rivals.

Halpin's September 8 start date gives him roughly a runway of months before the spin-off is expected to be completed. The transition from Culbertson, who stays on in a new capacity, is designed to avoid a gap in financial leadership during the separation process.

Comcast announced its plan to spin off NBCUniversal earlier in 2026, a move that will end decades of the media business operating under the cable and telecommunications giant's corporate umbrella. Once independent, NBCUniversal will carry its own debt, its own investor relations obligations, and its own quarterly earnings calls — the standard rhythm of public-company life that Wall Street uses to judge whether a media business is growing or shrinking.

Halpin will be the one reading those numbers to the market.
