Chelsea have signed 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton on a two-year deal, with neither club disclosing the fee BBC Sport.

It is a signing that turns a few assumptions on their heads. Welbeck is coming off the most productive league season of his entire career — 13 goals in 37 games for Brighton. Only three English players scored more in the Premier League last term BBC Sport. Not bad for a forward many had filed under "reliable squad man" years ago.

Welbeck becomes Chelsea's third signing of the summer, following Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta. But his arrival carries a different flavour. Since taking over the club in 2022, Chelsea's owners have predominantly signed younger players — prospects with resale value, teenagers and twenty-somethings built for the long haul. Welbeck's career has taken him through some of English football's biggest clubs. The Athletic had flagged the story the day before, noting that Welbeck had 12 months left on his Brighton contract The Athletic. Chelsea then confirmed the deal on 1 August.

Whether Welbeck can keep up last season's output at Stamford Bridge, where expectations weigh heavier than anywhere he has played since Arsenal, is the question that will shape how this signing is remembered.
