Juliette Lewis, who was nominated for an Oscar at 18 for her role in Martin Scorsese's 1991 film Cape Fear, has closed the loop on the story by playing the villain in Apple TV+'s series adaptation — and her character does not survive the finale.

The ten-episode series, created by Nick Antosca, concludes with an episode titled "The Executioners." In it, Lewis plays Crystal, revealed over the course of the show to be the sister of Max Cady, played by Javier Bardem. Crystal tormented Max as a child; after he grew up, he seduced her and psychologically broke her, according to Decider's breakdown of the ending Decider.

The finale brings the siblings' story to a violent close on a houseboat. Max confronts Crystal and asks, "Where is she?" — a question about a person Crystal admits she has lost. Max grabs her by the throat and shoots her in the stomach, killing her TVLine. He also kills Crystal's son, Luke, in the same episode, as reported by Variety Variety.

The cast is rounded out by Amy Adams as Anna Bowden and Patrick Wilson as Tom Bowden. She told Variety that filming the houseboat terror scene in that film "was so fun" and that she picked up acting tricks of the trade from the experience Variety.

The houseboat setting recurs in the series finale, closing a circle between the 1991 film and the 2026 adaptation. Showrunner Nick Antosca and star Amy Adams have discussed the series' connection to Scorsese's film in the ending, according to Entertainment Weekly EW.

Lewis had teased the finale on her official Facebook page, writing: "But you might guess what happens, finale next week!" Facebook.

What makes the casting striking is the symmetry: the actor who broke through as a teenager in the 1991 Cape Fear returns thirty-five years later not as a victim but as the villain — and the villain gets the same brutal, houseboat-set ending the original film was famous for.
