The Prince and Princess of Wales took all three children to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday, August 1 — the first time Prince Louis, age 8, had been old enough to attend a major sporting event, and the first time the three royal children had visited Scotland publicly (Hello!).

It was a family day out with athletics and gymnastics on the schedule, and the children's own sporting efforts were very much part of the conversation. Kate, the Princess of Wales, told Welsh gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper that Prince Louis had been practising his handstands. "Louis, you're perfecting your handstand at the moment," she said, according to Hello! magazine. Louis gave a candid self-assessment: "A bit." Then he added that "Charlotte says I'm not very good."

Princess Charlotte, age 11, was more confident in her own abilities. She told the gymnasts she could successfully do a handstand. Kate confirmed that Charlotte's favourite part of gymnastics was "the floor" and that she also "likes her dancing." Prince William backed that up, saying his daughter "loves ballet and gymnastics" — a hobby Kate first confirmed publicly back in 2017.

Prince George, age 13, was the most blunt about his own flexibility. "I'm rubbish at anything that involves flexibility," he said. His favourite event at his school sports day, he revealed, was the javelin. Louis, who recently took part in his first-ever school sports day, said he preferred the high jump — responding "Yeah" when Kate asked if he liked it.

The gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper gave Princess Charlotte a Team Wales leotard signed by both of them. William, meanwhile, volunteered Louis to help update the medal table after two additional gold wins for Team Wales at the Games.

At one point during the day, William was spotted comforting Louis, slipping into what Marie Claire described as quick-thinking "dad mode" (Marie Claire). The details of what upset Louis were not reported.

The Wales children are no strangers to friendly competition at home. In October 2025, William said Louis was "obsessed with trampolining" and that Louis and Charlotte "end up jumping up and down on the trampoline, beating each other up" (Hello!). The two younger siblings also share hobbies in cooking, sports and art, alongside gaming and films — interests George does not share (Hello!).

Their parents are known followers of football, rugby and tennis (Hello!). William and Kate also attended the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, according to the official royal family website — though that was well before any of the children joined them.

For Charlotte, who is fourth in line to the throne, and Louis, who is fifth, a Saturday at the Commonwealth Games was a chance to watch athletes up close and be quizzed about their own efforts. Louis's handstand may need work, by his sister's account. But he has time.
