Spider-Man Takes Over Imax as The Odyssey's Exclusive Run Ends

Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins playing on Imax screens on August 6, 2026, taking over the large-format network from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which held an exclusive run across Imax's entire domestic footprint — the United States and Canada — for three weekends. Variety
The handoff is unusual. Imax's biggest screens rarely clear one blockbuster to make room for another this quickly, but both films are pulling numbers that justify the real estate. The Odyssey, the first feature film shot entirely with Imax cameras, has already generated $221 million in Imax globally — and that figure comes before the film has even opened in major overseas markets like China, South Korea and Japan. It is Imax's fastest film to surpass $200 million and ranks as the company's third-highest grossing release to date. Variety
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, launched to $927 million worldwide, including $355 million domestically and $572 million internationally. In Imax, it has already delivered a combined $23 million across China, Japan and South Korea alone. The Spider-Man franchise has now accumulated $365 million in Imax receipts over its lifetime. Variety
Rather than a clean break, the two films will share Imax's global network. Brand New Day takes the digital Imax screens, while The Odyssey continues to play across all 41 of Imax's 70mm film locations worldwide. Imax plans to keep scheduling Nolan's film through at least September 17. Variety
The numbers behind the shuffle are staggering. Imax posted its highest-grossing month in history in July 2026, taking $257 million globally — 47% above its previous record — driven primarily by The Odyssey. Imax CEO Rich Gelfond commented on both films' performance, tying the record month and the Spider-Man handoff together as evidence of the format's pulling power. Variety
For audiences, the practical effect is simple: through late summer and into early autumn, the biggest screens in the world are running back-to-back tentpoles. One is a mythic epic shot on format-native cameras. The other is a superhero franchise that has reliably filled Imax auditoriums for nearly a decade. The screens, for now, are not short of product.
