CBS has ordered a pilot for the single-camera comedy Hilda! (In Lights!), making it the first broadcast network to move to the pilot stage for the 2027–28 season — the cycle that determines which new shows air starting in autumn 2027. A pilot is a single episode made to test whether a concept works before a network decides whether to order a full series. The order was reported by Deadline on 3 August 2026.

The show centres on Hilda, a 70-year-old woman from Nebraska with zero entertainment experience who packs up and moves to the big city to chase a lifelong dream of starring on Broadway. It is written by Abbey Caldwell, whose previous credit is the comedy series Laid. CBS Studios produces. Caldwell executive-produces alongside Will Graham, Max Linsky and Tonia Davis for Invitation Media.

Hilda! (In Lights!) was first flagged as a contender back in April 2026, when CBS unveiled its fall schedule. At that point the network ordered two additional scripts — a step short of a pilot, meaning the writers' room gets paid to develop further but no filmed episode is produced yet — for both Hilda and the drama I Know Who You Are. The Matt LeBlanc cop drama Flint was named in the same development slate, Deadline reported at the time. The Futon Critic, covering the April announcements, called the Hilda premise a "classic" setup — a spunky, small-town upstart pursuing a dream in the big city.

What gives this pilot order an extra layer is where it sits in CBS's comedy lineup. With Hilda joining the slate as a single-camera comedy — the kind shot film-style without a live studio audience — CBS will have more single-camera than multi-camera sitcoms on its schedule next season. The tally: single-camera entries Ghosts and Eternally Yours against the multi-camera Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. Deadline reports this is a first for the network.

For viewers, a pilot order is the first concrete sign that a show is genuinely in motion — a script exists, money is committed, and a filmed episode is coming. Most pilots do not become series. But Hilda now has a camera date ahead of it, and a 70-year-old Nebraska woman's Broadway dream has cleared the first real hurdle.
