Dermot Mulroney is leaving NBC's Chicago Fire after two seasons, with his character, Chief Pascal, being written off in Season 15. The news, first reported by Deadline on 31 July 2026 and independently confirmed by Variety, means the firehouse is losing its second cast member ahead of the new season.

Mulroney broke his silence on the exit at Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention, a fan event running 31 July through 2 August 2026. "Loved every minute of it," he said of his time on the show. "Became friends with this incredible crew of people." He credited his castmates with giving him "incredibly challenging scenes" and said they "gave it our all for two seasons" (Deadline).

He has one episode left in Season 15, in which Pascal's departure will be addressed. Exactly how the character exits remains under wraps.

Mulroney joined Chicago Fire in Season 13, stepping in as the new fire chief after Eamonn Walker's character, Boden, was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department (Deadline). His arrival in July 2024 was part of a broader reshuffle at Firehouse 51.

The road to his exit was already being paved. Mulroney went on hiatus for the latter half of Season 14, returning for the finale, where his character discussed his professional future with Severide, played by Taylor Kinney (Deadline). That conversation now reads as an early signal of what was coming.

He is not the only one heading out. Joe Miñoso, an original Chicago Fire cast member, is also leaving in Season 15 (Deadline). Miñoso has been with the series since it premiered in 2012. Meanwhile, Da'Vinchi, known for his role in BMF, is joining the cast, and Rob Morgan was cast in a role earlier this year (Deadline).

The wider One Chicago roster is holding steady. Deadline reported in May 2026 that all leads across Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. are set to return, including S. Epatha Merkerson and Taylor Kinney. Jason Beghe will also return to Chicago P.D. under his current contract (Deadline).

For fans, two departures in a single season is a significant shake-up for a show entering its fifteenth year. But the incoming cast suggests the writers' room is already building toward what comes next at Firehouse 51.
