2026 Lexus ES 500e: A Well-Built Luxury EV Held Back by Slow Charging

The 2026 Lexus ES 500e starts at $51,895 and drives well, but its DC fast-charging peaks at 150 kW — a rate Engadget describes as slow and less than half the charging speed of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric. That single specification sits at the center of a broader tension running through Lexus's eighth-generation ES: a sedan that feels comprehensively sorted as a luxury vehicle, yet built around EV hardware that trails the competitive set.
The redesigned ES lineup, now on sale, spans three powertrains. The ES 350h hybrid produces 244 horsepower and starts at $51,095, available with front- or all-wheel drive. The ES 350e is a single-motor, 221-horsepower electric model starting at $48,895, offering up to 307 miles of range. The ES 500e adds a second motor for all-wheel drive, producing 338 horsepower total, with range up to 276 miles depending on configuration. Both electric variants share a 74.7-kWh battery pack (Engadget).
The ES 500e uses the same 221-hp front motor as the ES 350e and adds a 118-horsepower permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle (Lexus Pressroom). Higher-trim ES 500e models are priced at $55,895 and $57,295, all figures including a $1,395 delivery, processing, and handling fee. This is the first generation of the ES to offer battery-electric powertrains. Lexus unveiled the all-new model at the Shanghai Motor Show in April 2025 as the second of three new BEV (battery electric vehicle) models scheduled to debut by March 2026 (Toyota Global Newsroom; Lexus Pressroom). The hybrid variant joined the lineup later, with Lexus confirming the full three-trim structure in May 2026 (Lexus Pressroom).
The 2026 ES grew roughly 6.5 inches in length over the previous model, with the added space going to rear-seat legroom and trunk space. The primary interface is a 14-inch touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. In Luxury trim, the ES 500e weighs nearly 5,000 pounds, roughly 1,000 pounds more than the base hybrid.
That weight gap matters. A 74.7-kWh pack in a near-5,000-pound sedan places the ES 500e at the heavier end of the compact-to-midsize luxury EV segment, and the modest battery capacity relative to vehicle mass helps explain the 276-mile range ceiling. Competitors with larger battery packs and 800-volt architectures — a higher-voltage electrical setup that allows faster charging and thinner wiring — routinely clear 300 miles in dual-motor configurations while accepting charging rates of 250 kW or more.
The 150 kW charging cap is the more consequential limitation. On a road trip, a 10-to-80-percent charging session on a 150 kW charger will take meaningfully longer than the same session on a 250-plus kW competitor, assuming the charging infrastructure can deliver the higher rate. For buyers who primarily charge at home and rarely exceed the daily range, this may be a non-issue. For those who expect their EV to behave like a gasoline sedan on long-haul routes, it is a structural constraint that no amount of cabin refinement offsets.
Engadget's first-drive review concludes that the ES 500e is priced right and drives great but feels built around outdated EV tech (Engadget). That framing is precise. The sedan's dynamics, interior packaging, and pricing strategy reflect the kind of systematic engineering discipline Lexus has built its reputation on. The charging architecture and battery density, by contrast, read as a generation behind.
The broader context here is that the ES is arriving in a market where 800-volt platforms and 270 kW+ charging are no longer exotic. Hyundai's E-GMP vehicles, the Porsche Taycan, and newer entries from Mercedes and BMW have normalized fast-charging capability that the ES cannot match. A buyer cross-shopping the ES 500e against a Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric will find similar luxury credentials but materially different road-trip charging experiences.
The broader question for Lexus is whether the ES's EV variants are meant to compete head-to-head with dedicated EV platforms or to serve as a transitional option for loyal buyers who want electric power without leaving the brand's comfort zone. The pricing suggests the latter. The $48,895 entry point for the ES 350e undercuts most of the dedicated-EV luxury field, and the shared platform with the hybrid keeps development costs distributed across higher-volume powertrains.
That is a defensible strategy. It also means the ES 500e is, by design, not pushing the charging-performance frontier. Buyers who prioritize cabin comfort, ride quality, and brand familiarity over fast-charge session times will find a well-executed package. Buyers who benchmark their EV against the best-in-class charging curve will look elsewhere.
In my view, what Lexus has done with the ES is the kind of pragmatic bet we have seen from established automakers before — building a credible product on familiar architecture rather than chasing the leading edge on every spec. It worked for Toyota's hybrid strategy two decades ago. Whether it works in an EV market where charging speed is increasingly a headline metric is a separate question, and one the ES 500e does not fully answer.
