Netflix has started production on This Summer Will Be Different, a 10-episode romance series shooting on Prince Edward Island and in Toronto, with six new cast members joining previously announced leads Sophie Nélisse, Francesca Reale, and Roby Attal (Variety, 4 August 2026).

The series is adapted from Carley Fortune's novel of the same name and follows Lucy, a young woman navigating her 20s and her first real love — with her best friend's brother — across multiple summers on Prince Edward Island. Nélisse, known for starring in the series Heated Rivalry, was tapped to lead the Netflix Canada adaptation in mid-July (The Hollywood Reporter, 16 July 2026).

The six newly announced recurring cast members are Jordan Rodrigues as Miles Lam, Jude Wilson as Zach, Natalie Brown as Christine, James Tupper as Ken, Tom Barnett as Peter, and Cecilia Owen as Joy (Variety, 4 August 2026).

Behind the camera, Dane Clark and Linsey Steward serve as creators, showrunners — the head writers who oversee a series day to day — and executive producers. The directing team spans Karen Maine, Jasmin Mozaffari, and Fab Filippo. Fortune herself holds an executive producer credit, alongside Sphere Media's Jennifer Kawaja, Elise Cousineau, and Sam Levine.

Fortune told The Hollywood Reporter in early July that she had read the first episode's script and described it as a perfect fit (Variety, 4 August 2026).

This is the second Carley Fortune novel to reach screens this year. Prime Video adapted her debut novel Every Summer After as the series Every Year After, which launched in June starring Matt Cornett and Sadie Soverall. Two of her books, now two streaming adaptations — on two different platforms.

For a general audience, that means a familiar pipeline is taking shape: bestselling Canadian fiction moving quickly into series production, with streaming platforms competing for the same author's work. Whether This Summer Will Be Different draws the audience Netflix expects is a question the viewing figures will answer when the series lands.
