Numan Acar has signed on to join Universal Pictures' new instalment of The Mummy, the action-adventure franchise heading back to screens in October 2027, according to Deadline.

The Turkish-German actor, who broke through with American audiences as the terrorist Haissam Haqqani on Showtime's Homeland, joins a cast that brings back the core trio from the 1999 original. Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah are all returning. There is no word yet on which role Acar will play.

Two more familiar faces from the original film have also closed deals. Kevin J. O'Connor and Oded Fehr are returning, both having been introduced in the 1999 Mummy. Fehr reprised his role once before, in 2001's The Mummy Returns.

O'Connor played Beni Gabor, a former French Foreign Legion comrade of Fraser's Rick O'Connell who turns conman and ends up in the service of the villainous Imhotep. Fehr played Ardeth Bay, the leader of the Medjai — a secret society of elite warriors sworn to guard against the ancient evil. Their return signals a direct line back to the original trilogy rather than the 2017 Tom Cruise-led reboot.

Behind the camera, the directing duo known as Radio Silence — Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — are helming from a script by David Coggeshall. Sean Daniel, a producer on the original films, returns to produce alongside Project X Entertainment's William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein, and Clayton Townsend. Fraser himself takes an executive producer credit, alongside Hivemond's Jason F. Brown.

Universal has staked out a wide release for 15 October 2027. The studio's EVP of Production Development Jay Polidoro and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project.

Acar has been busy across streaming and film. He has appeared in Amazon's Young Sherlock and Netflix's Legends, and is upcoming in Terrence Malick's The Way of the Wind and Liam Neeson's The Fix. O'Connor's career spans a striking range — from a breakout in Francis Ford Coppola's Peggy Sue Got Married through There Will Be Blood and The Master. Fehr has recently been seen in the biblical drama House of David, recurs on Apple TV+'s Your Friends & Neighbors, and has appeared in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Michael Johnston is also a new addition to the cast, rounding out the ensemble alongside Acar.

For fans of the original franchise, the return of Fraser, Weisz, and Hannah — plus O'Connor and Fehr — points to a film that leans into the chemistry and characters that made the 1999 film a box-office hit. The new Mummy is still more than a year away, but the cast is coming together quickly.
