Samantha Morton says she has not had an acting job for a full year since finishing production on Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in 2025. The two-time Oscar nominee made the disclosure on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, in an episode published on 3 August 2026 Variety.

Morton attributed the dry spell to her age. "At the end of the day, I'm 49," she told Horowitz Variety. The comment carries particular weight given the role she had just wrapped: Nolan cast her as Circe, the sorceress from Homer's epic, opposite Matt Damon. Morton had previously told Variety that she cried when Nolan called to offer her the part, and that roles of that calibre become "few and far between" as an actress gets older Variety. Landing the role, she said, gave her renewed confidence that she could keep working as she aged Business Insider.

Morton has been a working actor since 1991, with credits spanning Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, the television series The Walking Dead, Jim Jarmusch's Sweet and Lowdown, and Jim Sheridan's In America Variety. Her performance as Circe drew the highest praise of The Odyssey's ensemble cast from Variety's own ranking Variety.

This is not the first time Morton has seen a celebrated collaboration curtailed after the cameras stopped. She was the original voice of the chatbot Samantha in Spike Jonze's Her, reading her lines on set with Joaquin Phoenix during production. After filming wrapped, Jonze replaced her with Scarlett Johansson in post-production Variety.
