Gears of War: E-Day Beta Adds PvP After Fans Ask for It

The Coalition has added competitive player-versus-player multiplayer to the early access window of the Gears of War: E-Day open beta, a move the studio says came in response to fan feedback. The announcement arrived via the official Gears of War X account on 4 August, with Eurogamer confirming the details the following day.
PvP Versus — a symmetrical competitive mode that pits players against each other rather than against AI enemies — will be available for a limited time during the early access beta period, which runs from 6 to 10 August 2026 for players who pre-ordered the game. It joins Horde Siege, a new 12-player, three-squad co-op survival mode detailed by Xbox on 30 July, in a beta lineup that originally leaned heavily on that PvE experience.
The beta then reopens from 13 to 17 August for everyone, no pre-order required. According to the official Gears of War beta FAQ, both windows will feature the same content, and both will include Versus PvP and Horde Siege alongside maps, modes, characters and skins. Players can also unlock customisation rewards that carry over to the full game at launch. Preloads are already live ahead of the first session.
Versus is the competitive pillar of Gears multiplayer, and its return in E-Day combines the franchise's classic symmetrical map design with new traversal mechanics, as outlined at the Xbox Games Showcase on 7 June. That showcase is also where the open beta was first announced. Horde Siege, meanwhile, scales the series' signature co-op survival format up to a dozen players across three squads fighting together on the "Golden Quarter" map.
For fans, the addition of PvP to the early access window means they will not have to wait until the open weekend on 13 August to test their aim against other humans — provided they have a pre-order. Everyone else gets the same Versus content the following week.
Gears of War: E-Day launches on 6 October 2026. On the PC side, The Coalition and NVIDIA announced a partnership on 14 July covering technical features for the PC version, though specific details of that collaboration have not yet been fully detailed.
For players planning to jump in, the timeline is straightforward: pre-order holders get early access starting 6 August, PvP Versus arrives in that window for a limited stretch, and the fully open beta runs 13–17 August with the same content across both periods.
