The Gears of War: E-Day multiplayer open beta hit a 24-hour peak of 14,331 concurrent players on Steam, the highest figure any game in the franchise has reached on Valve's platform. According to SteamDB, that peak was recorded on 7 August 2026. Eurogamer

The number matters because Steam — the largest PC games storefront — publishes live concurrent-player counts that anyone can track. They offer a rare, apples-to-apples comparison point for how much attention a game is drawing at a given moment.

To put the figure in context, the previous Gears of War high on Steam belonged to Gears of War 5, which peaked at 10,196 concurrent players. Gears of War: Tactics, a strategy spin-off released roughly six years ago, reached 7,351. Gears of War: Reloaded, a recent remaster, topped out at 4,819. The original Gears of War trilogy and Gears of War 4 were never released on Steam at all.

That gap in the catalogue matters. Gears 5 was a record-breaking PC release for Microsoft, reportedly tripling the launch performance of Gears of War 4, according to an Xbox blog post — but a large share of those players came through the Microsoft Store and the Game Pass subscription service, storefronts that do not publish concurrent-player data the way Steam does. The E-Day beta's Steam-only figure, then, captures only a slice of total participation.

The early access open beta began on 6 August 2026 for players who pre-ordered the game on Xbox Series X|S or Steam, or who held a Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription. The beta features a horde mode — a co-op survival format the series is known for — and a competitive PvP (player-versus-player) versus mode that developer The Coalition added just before launch in response to fan demand.

What makes the player count stand out is the setting: this is a beta, not a full release. Thousands of people logged in to test an unfinished multiplayer build, and the turnout already eclipsed every previous Gears title's all-time Steam peak. That does not predict the full game's performance — beta populations swell with novelty and contract again at launch — but it signals genuine interest in a franchise that has not had a brand-new mainline entry since 2019.

Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to launch on 9 October 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Coalition is building the PC version in partnership with NVIDIA. A Premium Edition is listed on Steam at US$99.99 with a 9 October release date, according to SteamDB. Microsoft published an official multiplayer deep-dive on Xbox Wire on 30 July 2026, detailing the modes and systems now in players' hands.
