Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, developer Mojang confirmed on August 5. The native Switch 2 version brings a graphical overhaul called Vibrant Visuals, save-data transfers from the original Switch, and an upgrade path for existing owners — though whether that upgrade is free or paid remains undecided (GameSpot).

Vibrant Visuals is described by Mojang as the biggest visual update Minecraft has received to date (Minecraft.net). It adds enhanced lighting, shadows, and other graphical improvements, and will be switched on by default on the Switch 2 version (Minecraft.net). The update works across all supported Marketplace content — the in-game store where players buy community-made maps, skins, and texture packs. There are limits, though: Vibrant Visuals will not apply to split-screen multiplayer sessions or to certain worlds and Marketplace content (GameSpot).

For anyone who has spent hours building on the original Switch, the important detail is continuity. Save data from the existing Switch version of Minecraft will carry over directly to the Switch 2 version, so players will not lose their worlds or progress (GameSpot). Mojang has also confirmed a digital upgrade path for those who already own the game on the original Switch. The publisher has not yet said whether that upgrade will cost money or be provided free.

The Switch 2 version of Minecraft was first announced during a Nintendo Direct in June 2026, alongside a slate of other Switch 2 titles (Minecraft.net). The native release — meaning the game runs natively on Switch 2 hardware rather than through backward compatibility with the original Switch — features the Vibrant Visuals upgrade, 15 music tracks, and support for up to 40 players in multiplayer (Nintendo Life).

One Nintendo-exclusive piece of content is also getting the visual treatment. The Super Mario Mash-Up pack, available only on Nintendo versions of Minecraft, is being updated to support Vibrant Visuals (GameSpot). The pack includes a custom Mario-themed world with locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza, along with Mario music and character skins (Minecraft.net).

For fans, this release is less about reinvention and more about the game catching up to stronger hardware. Minecraft has been available on the original Switch since 2017, and a native Switch 2 build means better performance and visuals without leaving a decade of player creations behind. The Super Mario pack getting the same visual polish is a nice touch for Nintendo players specifically — a small but real perk of the platform's long-standing partnership with the franchise.
