YouTuber Behind the Games first spotted the sticker, posting video on X on August 6, 2026, after a contact they described as a "trusted source" received one of the newly stickered consoles. The post had racked up 91,900 views within hours. Sony is ending production of PlayStation game discs entirely in January 2028, according to GameSpot. The sticker on the box is, in effect, a 17-month countdown.

The reaction has been loud. Many players have called for a boycott of the company over the end of physical games, and the backlash has been significant enough that Sony's chief financial officer, Lin Tao, addressed it directly. The commercial reality behind the decision is stark. In the quarter covering April through June, 82% of Sony's game sales were already digital — meaning more than four out of every five copies sold were downloads rather than discs.
