BMG Acquires Andrew Stockdale's Wolfmother Rights, Expanding a Decade-Old Partnership

BMG has acquired a basket of rights tied to Andrew Stockdale's interests in Wolfmother, the Grammy-winning Australian rock band, the music company announced on its newsroom page on 3 August 2026 (BMG).

The deal hands BMG control of Stockdale's publishing, recorded music royalties and neighbouring rights — the last of which are payments to performers and producers when their recordings are broadcast or streamed publicly — across Wolfmother's catalogue. Financial terms were not disclosed (Billboard).

Stockdale is Wolfmother's vocalist, guitarist, co-founder and primary songwriter. The Sydney trio broke through internationally with their 2005 self-titled album, a record that pushed their riff-driven rock into films, television shows, advertising campaigns and video games. Their track "Woman" won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance, and the band has collected multiple ARIA Awards — Australia's premier music prizes — including Best Group, as well as an APRA Songwriter of the Year award. They also received nominations at the BRIT Awards.

Their 2009 follow-up, Cosmic Egg, peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, the chart that ranks the most-consumed albums in the United States each week. Wolfmother's recordings have since been placed in The Hangover, Jackass Number Two, Shrek the Third, Ted Lasso, NHL, Madden NFL, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk's Project 8, among other film, television and gaming properties — placements that generate ongoing sync licensing income for the rights holders.

The acquisition extends a relationship that began in 2016, when BMG became Stockdale's global music publisher. That arrangement itself built on an earlier connection: Heath Johns, now BMG's president for Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, signed Stockdale to his first publishing deal in 2005, then while at Universal Music Publishing. Johns commented publicly on the new acquisition, though the specific remarks were not detailed in the initial reporting (Billboard).

Stockdale was also on hand to induct Led Zeppelin into the UK Hall of Fame, a moment that underscored the classic-rock lineage Wolfmother have always drawn from.

The deal was covered by Music Business Worldwide on 4 August and by HITS Daily Double on 3 August (MBW; HITS Daily Double).

For BMG, the acquisition folds another established rock catalogue into a portfolio that has grown steadily through artist-rights deals across genres. For Stockdale, it consolidates his publishing and royalty interests under one roof with a partner he has worked with for a decade.
