The Hollywood Bowl, the 17,500-seat amphitheatre in the Hollywood Hills, posted the cancellation notice on its official Instagram account and its website, which lists the performance as "canceled." Rolling Stone reported the news on August 6.

In a statement posted to the band's social media, frontman Billy Gibbons said: "Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance." The statement did not elaborate on the nature of those obstacles.

The Hollywood Bowl date was a co-billed concert with Cheap Trick, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees from Rockford, Illinois. With the headline slot scrubbed, Cheap Trick moved fast: the band announced a "very special and intimate" show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on the same Wednesday night. The Troubadour, a 500-capacity club on Santa Monica Boulevard, is a venue several orders of magnitude smaller than the Bowl. It sold out quickly, according to Rolling Stone.

For ticket holders to the canceled Hollywood Bowl show, the refund process is automatic. ZZ Top said all tickets — including transportation and parking passes — will be refunded to the original payment method, and buyers can also request refunds at their point of purchase.

The Hollywood Bowl cancellation sits in the middle of ZZ Top's The Big One tour, which had stops slated for Fresno, California, as well as Saratoga, New York, and Modesto, California, in the days surrounding the August 5 date. The band has not announced whether those dates are affected.

ZZ Top — the Texas trio known for blues-rock staples like "La Grange" and "Sharp Dressed Man" — have toured continuously since forming in 1969. Drummer Frank Beard is the band's third original member alongside Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill; Hill died in 2021 and was replaced by Elwood Francis, Hill's longtime guitar technician. The band has not said which personnel matter prompted the cancellation.

For fans who had held tickets to the Bowl, the Troubadour pivot offered a silver lining — a rare chance to see Cheap Trick in a room the size of a large living room rather than an open-air amphitheatre. Whether ZZ Top return to the road on their remaining Big One dates is a question the band has not yet answered.
