James Gunn has denied an online rumour that Matt Reeves is filming The Batman 2 and The Batman 3 back to back. Responding to a fan on Threads who asked him to confirm or deny, the DC Studios co-chief wrote plainly: "I can deny." Variety

The denial puts a stop to speculation that had been circulating among fans that Reeves might shoot both sequels in a single, continuous production — a cost-saving approach occasionally used on blockbuster franchises but not, apparently, in play here.

The Batman 2 is currently in production in London, with Reeves directing and Robert Pattinson returning in the title role. Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. The supporting cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch, according to Variety.

The release path for the film has been anything but straightforward. Warner Bros. originally slotted The Batman 2 for 2 October 2026. It was then pushed to 1 October 2027, and most recently moved to 18 February 2028 — nearly six years after the first film's March 2022 release. The studio shifted the date in part to give Reeves additional time in post-production, Variety reported in July 2026. Gunn defended the first delay, framing it as a creative necessity rather than a sign of trouble.

Gunn has used his Threads account repeatedly to clarify how Reeves' Batman films fit within the broader DC landscape. He has said it is not an "allowed" thing for the Reeves films to be treated as prequels to the DCU — the shared cinematic universe Gunn is building with DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran — but rather director Matt Reeves' own choice. Gunn added that treating them as prequel movies to the DCU ones was "presumably the original plan" before the current restructuring. He has also said he does not intend to retell Batman and Superman's origin stories, reasoning that audiences already know them.

For fans, the takeaway is straightforward. One sequel is filming. A second is not part of the current plan. And the wait for The Batman 2 will stretch well into 2028, with Warner Bros. giving Reeves the runway to finish it on his terms.
