Peter Katsis, a music manager whose client list ran from Ministry to the Backstreet Boys to the Smashing Pumpkins, died on Thursday at age 69. Mark Beaven, co-founder of the management firm Advanced Alternative Media, confirmed the death to Rolling Stone, having first shared the news in a social media post stating that Katsis had "passed this AM."

Katsis was 23 when he discovered and began managing Ministry, the industrial rock band that would become one of the most abrasive and enduring acts in the genre. In the mid-1980s, he worked as an agent for young Chicago house artists including Marshall Jefferson and Adonis, booking some of their earliest gigs in New York and London — a pairing that placed him at the intersection of two distinctly American underground movements within a few years of each other.

He later moved to Los Angeles and became a partner at the Firm, a talent and management agency whose roster at various points included Korn, Snoop Dogg, One Direction, Enrique Iglesias, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Audioslave, Limp Bizkit and the Backstreet Boys. After the Firm, Katsis joined YM&U Group in Beverly Hills, where his clients included Morrissey, Jane's Addiction, Bush, 311, Liz Phair and Fever 333. More recently, he and Joel Mark co-managed artists together at their own firm, as reported by Billboard in 2022.

Katsis's career was not without its fractures. In 2015, Billboard reported that the Smashing Pumpkins were allegedly at the centre of the dissolution of a 25-year business relationship between Katsis and Jeff Kwatinetz, his partner at the management company Prospect Park.

Few managers move with equal fluency between industrial rock, boy-band pop and Chicago house — three sounds with almost nothing in common on the surface. Katsis did, across more than four decades, and the artists who trusted him with their careers came from nearly every corner of the commercial and alternative landscape. His death was met with tributes from across that spectrum, a reflection of how wide his reach extended.
