Kid Cudi is turning a SoundCloud beat into a casting call. The rapper and singer announced a contest on 6 August in which he will build an original instrumental from scratch, post it for aspiring artists to record over, and then select a handful of entrants to form a brand-new music group — signed to his label, Mad Solar. Billboard

The contest nearly did not happen at all. Cudi initially said he would only go ahead if his announcement post reached 100,000 likes and 20,000 retweets. He then lowered the threshold to 2,000 likes, a bar that was quickly met and locked the plan in place.

Here is how it works. Cudi will upload the beat to his SoundCloud on Friday by 6pm Pacific time. Entrants will then have one week to record and submit their vocal takes over the track. From those submissions, Cudi will hand-pick the artists who form the new group, and those selected will join the Mad Solar roster — the label he founded, which serves as the home for his own releases and signings.

Cudi has said he will be exacting in his judgement. He told fans he is looking for artists who are polished, who bring an original sound and story, and who genuinely have something to say. Vague as that brief sounds, it signals he is approaching the search as an A&R exercise — the industry term for talent scouting and artist development — rather than a giveaway.

The announcement arrives on the heels of a busy stretch. Cudi wrapped his Rebel Ragers Tour in June, a Live Nation-promoted run announced on 26 January with tickets going on sale 30 January at 10am local time. The trek featured M.I.A., Big Boi, A-Trak, Me N U and Dot da Genius across select dates. His most recent album, Free, arrived in 2025 and debuted at No. 192 on the Billboard 200, the chart that ranks the most consumed albums in the US each week. Billboard

For unsigned artists, the appeal is straightforward. A self-produced beat from an established artist, a guaranteed listen, and a label deal at the end of it is a combination that open-mic nights and demo submissions rarely offer. The catch is that the window is tight — seven days from beat drop to deadline — and the competition will be global, given SoundCloud's reach.

Cudi did not specify how many artists he will select, when the group's first release might arrive, or what the financial terms of the Mad Solar deals will entail. Those details, along with the Friday SoundCloud link, are what hopefuls will be watching for next.
