Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors on 7 August 2026 that low-latency game streaming — playing high-end games over the internet without a powerful console or PC — is "around the corner," and that devices which were never built for games are about to become game machines.

Speaking during Take-Two's first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call, Zelnick predicted the games industry would enter "commercial streaming mode" within three years. He said the shift could multiply the effective install base of players by ten, though he was careful to note that would not necessarily mean ten times the revenue (Eurogamer).

The vision is straightforward: if a game streams to any screen with a fast enough connection, the audience for any single title could expand far beyond those who own a PlayStation, Xbox or gaming PC. Zelnick did not name specific platforms or partnerships.

The streaming remarks came alongside Take-Two's latest financial results. The New York-based publisher — which operates through Rockstar Games, 2K and Zynga — posted a GAAP net loss of US$34.1 million, or US$0.18 per share, for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 (Yahoo Finance). For the full fiscal year 2026, which ended earlier in 2026, net bookings grew 19% to US$6.72 billion.

Take-Two revised its projected fiscal 2027 revenue upward to US$8.2 billion, up from a previous range of US$8.0 to US$8.2 billion guided in May 2026. That May guidance had fallen below analysts' average estimate of US$9.1 billion, according to Reuters, though the company reaffirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI remains on track to launch within fiscal 2027 — the period running through March 2027.

GTA 6 pre-orders have been "exceptionally strong," Zelnick said, without disclosing specific figures. The game has not been delayed, carries no announced price increase, and its marketing campaign remains on track for summer, as Variety reported in May 2026. A PC release date has not been announced.

For context, Take-Two's full fiscal 2026 digital revenue — sales of games and in-game content delivered online rather than through physical discs — reached US$6.46 billion, accounting for 97% of total net revenue. That figure lines up with a broader industry shift: Sony has decided to stop manufacturing physical disc-based PlayStation games and pivot to an all-digital model.

The streaming push Zelnick described would extend that trend further. If games no longer need to be installed on a specific machine, the line between a gaming device and everything else — a television, a tablet, a phone — blurs. Whether the infrastructure and consumer appetite arrive on his three-year timeline is the open question. The install base, for now, is still anchored to hardware you can hold.
