Jennifer Rubio and Stewart Butterfield, married in 2020 and parents to two young children, announced their separation on August 5 in a joint statement posted to Instagram.

The couple said they made the decision "with deep love and respect for one another" and that although they will no longer be married, they remain a family, according to Yahoo Entertainment, which reported on the announcement Yahoo Entertainment. Divorce documents were filed in King County Superior Court in Washington state.

Rubio, 38, co-founded Away, the direct-to-consumer luggage brand, in 2015 with Steph Korey. The company reached a valuation of $1.4 billion in 2019 before stepping back as president in 2020. She was later elected to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Board of Trustees and has served as a trustee of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Butterfield co-founded Flickr, the photo-sharing platform, in 2004 and Slack, the workplace messaging app, in 2013. Salesforce bought Slack in 2021 in a deal worth approximately $27.7 billion. Butterfield sits on the boards of the Whitney Museum and the Dia Art Foundation.

Together, Rubio and Butterfield built a real estate portfolio valued at more than $140 million, including properties in Aspen and New York, plus a 20,000-acre ranch in New Mexico they purchased from fashion designer Tom Ford for an estimated $40 million, Town & Country reported Town & Country.

Their philanthropy has been equally large in scale. The couple pledged more than $23 million to the Met to permanently endow its paid internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Their Rubio Butterfield Foundation made a separate pledge supporting the Met's new Tang Wing for modern and contemporary art, expected to open in 2030.

The foundation, valued at $215 million, will continue operating after the separation, according to Inc Inc.

Rubio and Butterfield have two children together: Oliver, 4, and Francesca, 3. Butterfield also has a 19-year-old daughter, Sonnet, from his previous marriage to Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake.

A source told Page Six they were "shocked" by the split, while a second source told the outlet the separation had been developing privately for some time. The couple were last seen together publicly at the Sun Valley Conference in July, Town & Country reported.

What stands out is how much these two built together in six years — a real estate empire, a $215 million foundation, major museum gifts — and how quickly it all now has to be divided. The financial details alone make this one of the more consequential separations in the tech and culture worlds this year.

Neither Rubio nor Butterfield has indicated whether the divorce proceedings will address the division of their property portfolio or foundation assets beyond the foundation's stated plan to continue operating.
