Square Enix will reveal new footage of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation during Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 25, with the game's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, presenting the segment live on stage. (VGC)

Opening Night Live, the annual showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley that kicks off Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, is scheduled for Wednesday, August 25 at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm BST. Hamaguchi, who also directed the trilogy's second entry, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, will walk viewers through what Square Enix is calling "a new look" at the upcoming title.

Revelation is the third and final game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy — a modern, multi-part reimagining of the 1997 role-playing classic. The first two entries, Remake (2020) and Rebirth (2024), each told a portion of that story; Revelation closes the arc.

One detail will matter to anyone who has followed the series across platforms: Revelation will be the first game in the trilogy that is not a timed console exclusive. The previous two launched first on PlayStation before reaching other platforms months or years later. Revelation breaks that pattern with a simultaneous release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

That launch is still some way off. Square Enix has placed the release window in the first half of 2027, but no firm date has been announced. What Gamescom attendees will get is an early preview — and, for those at the show floor, a chance to go hands-on. Square Enix will have a booth (Hall 8, A-21) where visitors can play all three trilogy titles, including Revelation.

For fans of the series, the Gamescom appearance offers the clearest signal yet that Revelation is far enough along to show in public, with its director doing the honours rather than a trailer drop alone. The simultaneous multiplatform launch also widens the audience: whether someone's first Remake-series console was a PlayStation, an Xbox or the newly released Switch 2, they will start on day one.

What remains unknown is how much of Revelation's story and gameplay the segment will actually cover. Given the trilogy's habit of surprising players with deviations from the original game's plot, even a short look could raise more questions than it answers.
