Spider-Man: Brand New Day Nets $145 Million Second Weekend — Third-Biggest Hold in History
Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $145 million domestically in its second weekend in theatres, landing the third-biggest sophomore frame of all time, Variety reports. Only two films have ever held higher: 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($149 million) and 2019's Avengers: Endgame ($147 million). The Sony and Marvel production, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, now sits at $655 million in North America (domestic — the United States and Canada) and $1.67 billion worldwide.
That second-weekend figure landed at the low end of pre-release forecasts, which had ranged from $143 million per Sony's own projection to as high as $160 million, Forbes and Gold Derby reported. A $43 million Friday, noted by The Hollywood Reporter, set the pace for the three-day haul.
The numbers pile up quickly. Brand New Day opened to a record-setting $355 million domestically — $357.1 million including previews, per Boxoffice Pro — and $932 million globally, beating Avengers: Endgame's all-time domestic opening record, Deadline confirmed. It crossed $1 billion worldwide in just six days, became the fastest film to reach $500 million domestically, and posted the biggest Tuesday ever at the domestic box office with $42 million, Deadline and Variety reported.
Only eight movies in history have surpassed $100 million in their second weekend. Brand New Day now shares that short list with some of the highest-grossing films ever made. The Force Awakens remains the all-time domestic champion at $936.6 million, while Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) hold the global top spots after several re-releases.
Behind the web-slinger, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continued its own record run. The Universal release grossed $31.5 million in its fourth weekend, a 38% decline, bringing its totals to $461 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide, Variety reports. It now ranks as Nolan's highest-grossing film, overtaking The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1.008 billion). Imax contributed $289 million to that total, making The Odyssey the biggest Imax release of all time — surpassing Avatar's $271 million lifetime haul.
Universal's president of domestic theatrical distribution, Jim Orr, also saw the studio's romantic comedy One Night Only debut below expectations, taking $5.7 million from 3,012 theatres and placing third at the box office.
For the industry, the August corridor has rarely looked this crowded. Two billion-dollar releases are still drawing crowds at once, and one of them is breaking records every few days.
