Spider-Man: Brand New Day Lands Second-Biggest Domestic Opening in History With $355 Million

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $355 million from 4,487 North American theatres in its domestic opening weekend — the second-biggest debut in Hollywood history, behind only 2019's Avengers: Endgame at $357 million, not adjusted for inflation (Variety). Domestic, in box-office terms, means the United States and Canada.
The film opened Friday, 31 July 2026 and took $168 million on its first day — the highest single opening day in Hollywood history (Deadline). That figure was fuelled in part by $72 million in preview ticket sales, the largest preview haul ever for a domestic release (CNBC). Sony had projected a $325 million weekend frame (The Hollywood Reporter); the actual number beat that by $30 million.
The scale of the launch puts it ahead of the previous third-place holder, 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260 million), and 2018's Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million) (Variety). Internationally, the film was projected to collect around $550 million, bringing its estimated worldwide total to roughly $875 million — which would rank as the second-biggest worldwide debut after Avengers: Endgame's $1.2 billion first weekend.
Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige producing. Sony spent approximately $225 million on production, before marketing costs. The film carries a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 'A' grade on CinemaScore exit polls — the latter drawn from audience surveys conducted on opening night (Variety).
The story picks up after No Way Home, in which Tom Holland's Peter Parker erased his identity from the world to save the multiverse. Brand New Day carries forward from that reset.
The weekend was not just a Spider-Man event. Across all films in release, the combined domestic total exceeded $425 million — the biggest collective weekend in box office history, surpassing the $402 million record set by Avengers: Endgame and the $314 million from Avengers: Infinity War (Variety). Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which had topped the chart the previous weekend with a $90 million opening, earned $51 million in its third frame.
For context on the 2026 landscape so far: Toy Story 5 leads the year domestically with $457.2 million, followed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($429.8 million), Michael ($372.3 million), The Odyssey ($359.0 million), and Project Hail Mary ($344.1 million) (Box Office Mojo). Worldwide, Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have each crossed $1 billion.
What makes Brand New Day stand out is the margin. The $355 million domestic debut is $2 million shy of Endgame's all-time record, and it got there without a preceding cliffhanger at the scale of Marvel's Infinity Saga climax. For Sony, the result also dwarfs the franchise's earlier benchmarks — Spider-Man: Far From Home managed $185.06 million over a six-day holiday corridor in 2019, which was itself an all-time Sony opening record at the time (Sony Pictures). Seven years later, the studio cleared that figure in a single day.
Sunday grosses remain studio estimates until Monday's actuals are confirmed.
