Mattel Unveils Whitney Houston Barbie Signature Doll at Atlanta Gala
Mattel has unveiled a Whitney Houston Barbie Signature Doll, debuting the collectable on Saturday evening, August 8, at the fifth annual Legacy of Love Gala in Atlanta. The gala was presented by the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation and Primary Wave Music, a music publisher and talent management company that manages stakes in artist catalogues. The evening's theme, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," nodded to Houston's 1987 single of the same name — and the doll's look was drawn directly from that song's music video.
Pat Houston, president of the foundation and executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston, co-hosted the gala with Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight. She also worked closely with Mattel on the doll itself. Nathan Baynard, Mattel's vice president and head of Barbie, commented on the release but did not disclose further production details.
The Legacy of Love Gala opened with a tribute to Clive Davis, the veteran label executive who served as honorary chair of the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation for the last four years. Gordon Chambers, the singer-songwriter and pianist, performed "Greatest Love of All." Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds headlined the night, bringing out a surprise guest — singer Chanté Moore — for a duet of "Why Does It Hurt So Bad." Gary Houston and Jada Nikole closed with a reimagined version of "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)."
The Whitney Houston doll joins Mattel's Barbie Signature Series, a collector-focused line that has previously honoured Miley Cyrus, Aaliyah, Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner, Diana Ross and Elton John. Each doll in the series replicates a specific look tied to the artist's career.
Mattel's Barbie Dream Gap Project, the brand's charitable initiative aimed at closing gaps in girls' access to opportunity, will donate to the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation. The foundation funds educational opportunities, grants and scholarships for young people.
