Como sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea for over £30m as Fabregas reunion takes shape
Como have signed defender Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea for more than £30m, ending a near-20-year association between the player and his boyhood club. The 27-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Italian side, whose manager is former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas (BBC Sport).
Chelsea receive an initial £25.7m, with a further £5.1m available in add-ons, following protracted negotiations that wrapped up on 9 August. The final figure updates earlier reporting — Fabrizio Romano had cited an agreement worth €30m plus €6m in add-ons on 3 August, while The Guardian had put the fee at £27.5m the same day. The BBC's later figure reflects the confirmed, completed deal.
Chalobah joined Chelsea as a child and made 151 senior appearances across all competitions, winning five trophies. Those included the FA Cup in 2018 and the Conference League — Europe's third-tier club competition — in 2025. He also spent time on loan at Ipswich, Huddersfield, Lorient and Crystal Palace before establishing himself in the first team. Two senior England caps came his way, and he was a late call-up to England's World Cup squad.
The Como connection runs deeper than a transfer fee. Fabregas, now managing the club he joined as a player in 2022, was briefly a team-mate of Chalobah during his own spell at Chelsea. That shared history clearly mattered to both parties. "He is a leader who can raise the level of the team, and I am very happy that he has chosen Como," Fabregas said (BBC Sport).
For Chelsea, the sale continues a summer of significant outgoings. Chalobah, a graduate of the club's academy — the system that develops players from school age through to the senior squad — had been a useful squad member but was not an automatic starter. More than £30m for a homegrown player represents pure profit in accounting terms, since no transfer fee was paid to bring him in. That matters under the Premier League's financial rules, which cap how much clubs can lose over a rolling three-year period.
For Chalobah, it is a fresh start in a league he knows from his loan spell at Lorient in France, though Serie A will demand more. Como, a club based on the shores of Lake Como and part-owned by the Wycombe Group, have invested ambitiously under Fabregas. They are building something deliberate: not a glamour project, but a club with a clear idea of how to recruit.
What makes this transfer stand out is the human thread. Chalobah leaves the club he joined as a boy. He walks into one led by a man he once shared a dressing room with. Five years in Italy gives him the long contract that players crave at this stage of their careers, and Fabregas gets a defender he knows and trusts.
